Ray Emery

Raymond "Razor or Sugar Ray" Emery was born on September 28, 1982 in Cayuga, Ontario. Throughout his playing career in both minor and professional hockey, Emery has excelled. While there have been the odd bumps along the way, Ray Emery has established himself as a premier goaltender in the NHL while playing for the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2009-2010 season. Emery was drafted 99th overall by the Senators in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. However, it was not until 2005 that he burst onto the NHL scene. From the moment he joined the Ottawa Senators, he instantly became my favourite player. As i have stated before, i am a goalie so it is obvious that my favourite players are goalies. Why was Emery different than anyone else? Why do I admire him so much? There is something about his style, his swagger than differentiates him from everybody else. Not only is he a great goalie but his competitiveness and toughness cannot be matched. He has passion for the game and truly loves the sport of hockey. It is for all of these reasons and many more that Emery is one of my biggest idols. When he was on the Senators, watching him play was the highlight of my day. During the 2007-2007 season, Emery backstopped the Senators on their run to the Stanley Cup Finals. It was during this run that i was blessed with the opportunity to finally meet my idol. Not only did I see him at restaurants but he was on the same floor as me in Anaheim when i went to go watch the Senators play in the Stanley Cup Finals. The autographed t-shirt that i have him from him hands in my residence room here at McGill.

Outside of ice hockey, Emery is known for his flamboyant lifestyle. He has numerous tattoos, which include the initials of his parents and brothers. He even made a bet where if he ate a cockroach, Captain Daniel Alfredsson would pay for a new tattoo for him. In addition, he has an African symbol for the number one (his jersey number) and his nickname “Razor” written across his chest. Also, Emery had a very unique style when it came to owning cars. He once drove a white hummer as well as an orange Lamborghini. Besides from this, Ray Emery is known around the NHL as having a very wide and unique selection of clothes and accessories. He was feature on TSN concerning his wardrobe which includes 50 pairs of shoes, a dozen watches, a $4000 dollar suit (he has blue, orange and white suits in his collection), as well as diamond chains.

While Emery has so much potential both on and off the ice, his career has been plagued by numerous on and off ice altercations. Tardiness, altercations and attitude led him to be released from the Ottawa Senators on June 20th, 2008. He would sign in Russia for the 2008-2009 season before returning with the Philadelphia Flyers for this season. While I do not watch him play as much anymore because he is in Ottawa, Emery still remains my idol and a person that I look up to. Below are some of the most memorable events that occured in Ray Emery's career as an Ottawa Senators
